Group Therapy

For many pain patients, it can be highly advantageous to participate in one of our group programmes. In addition to the material that is presented, the contact with other affected persons is particularly important. Patients have the opportunity to profit from the experience of the others and provide mutual support. Some patients continue to meet for various activities after the programme is completed.

Pain Coping Group (PCG)
In the pain coping group, patients meet to exchange ideas and experience and to learn pain coping strategies under the guidance of a psychologist. Examples of the course material include acquiring basic knowledge about the generation and maintenance of chronic pain, pain acceptance, the relationship between pain and stress, depression/fear, overexertion/underexertion, problem-solving, as well as pleasure training. Relatives are invited to attend one specially designed session. The PCG meets on two afternoons a week for 2 hours for a period of 6 weeks. Four such programmes are normally conducted per year.

Foreign-Language PCG (MK-SBG)

This programme is geared to patients with minimal knowledge of German and is conducted jointly with a physiotherapist. The content is comparable to that of the regular PCG, but additionally covers topics such as native country/culture and offers support in dealing with physicians, insurance companies, and ministries. The course is held during 1 hour on one morning a week; entry is possible at all times.

Relaxation Group (PMR)
In this group, the Jacobson method of progressive muscle relaxation is practised in combination with visualisation of peaceful and fantasy images. Physical rest and inner calmness have positive effects on pain and help to reduce stress. The techniques are easy to learn, but must be practised regularly. The group meets on one afternoon a week for 1 hour for a period of 6 weeks.
