Individual therapy

In individual psychotherapy, the patient’s symptoms and problems are investigated in a specific and personal manner. Sessions generally take place once a week and last for 50 minutes. The number of sessions is variable, and depends on the patient’s particular situation. The cost of this treatment is covered by the health and accident insurance companies.

Individual therapy is indicated when:

  • there are marked fears, mood impairment, or other psychological symptoms in addition to pain
  • the patient does not wish to learn pain coping strategies and relaxation techniques in a group
  • other prominent problem areas are present

It is possible to also participate in group therapy parallel to individual therapy.

Biofeedback
Biofeedback (feedback of physical processes) is a computer-assisted method that detects signals from the body such as muscle tension in the neck and shoulder area by means of sensors and makes it visible to the patient on a computer screen. Utilising this visual information, it is possible by specific training to reduce tension and relieve pain. The following physical reactions are of principal importance:

  • Muscle tension
  • Skin temperature
  • Sweat-gland activity
  • Breathing

Biofeedback helps patients learn to better observe their body, obtain a basic understanding of physical and mental relationships, and improve their ability to relax. Biofeedback treatment always occurs in individual sessions.
