Approximately 30 percent of the population suffers from a headache at least once a month. Migraine and tension headache are the most common types, but there are actually more than 200 different kinds of headache!
The diagnosis is based on the medical history and the neurological examination. In certain cases radiologic studies and laboratory tests are necessary. Modern headache treatment is multimodal, and in addition to the neurologist (medication) may involve a psychologist (relaxation techniques, biofeedback, coping strategies) and a physiotherapist (endurance training, home program). Interventional therapy (anaesthetist) as well as acupuncture and hypnosis have also proven to be effective.
