The Centre for Pain Medicine offers current, scientifically established interventional procedures. For example, for back or leg pain local anaesthesia of the intervertebral joints or spinal nerve roots may be indicated. The result can help to determine which additional interventions, in conjunction with the other therapeutic measures, can be used to achieve longer-lasting pain relief. Specific nerve blocks may also be useful in diagnosing many other causes of pain, such as headaches or pain arising from the nerves to the hands. In certain cases, an implanted spinal-cord stimulator (SCS) or pump system (direct administration of medications into the spinal fluid) may produce long-term pain relief and improvement of the quality of life.
