The specialist in anaesthesiology plays an important role in the Centre for Pain Medicine. He or she generally remains the patient’s primary caregiver from the first consultation until therapy is completed. As the patient’s personal physician, and working closely with the other involved team members, the anaesthetist coordinates the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures recommended by the team, initiating them and following the patient’s clinical course.
An important aspect of the anaesthetist’s role is the use of interventional techniques as a part of the therapeutic concept. Since diagnostic measures are essential to determine the optimal treatment strategy, specific diagnostic blocks in which local anaesthetics are injected at the site presumed to be the most likely origin of the pain (nerves, muscles, ligaments, etc.) may be performed in order to confirm or exclude the diagnosis. The use of fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or computed tomography in combination with the anaesthetist’s expertise ensures maximal quality and patient safety.
